5 World Trade Center was one of the low rise buildings surrounding the plaza, it was located directly opposite 6 World Trade Center and was located on the northeast corner of the complex.
It had one of the largest floor plans of any of the WTC buildings, with an average of 120,000 square feet of space per floor.
Primarily occupied by Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse, the lower floors of the building were occupied by retail establishments such as Krispy Kreme Donuts and a large, 2 story Borders Book Store.
The plaza level entrance to the building also had direct access to the mall At The World Trade Center, the largest indoor shopping mall in Manhattan. A police desk was also present on plaza level.
In 2000, a large diesel generator plant was installed on the roof of 5 World Trade Center to support the 6 generators already installed on the B6 Basement level.
The "Survivors Staircase" which received its name after it was used by hundreds of evacuees during the 9/11 attacks, ran down the side of 5 World Trade Center connecting the plaza level to Vesey Street.
